Foodbank Launches Drop Off Bins at South Australian Westfields

Each month, approximately 102,718 South Australians experience food insecurity with one third of them being children. This statistic is horrifying, especially in these cold and hunger-inducing winter months. Foodbank SA is a community, not for profit organisation, and the largest hunger relief agency in the state. They  distribute through over 750 community support agencies, while assisting 150,000 South Australians every year.

With the current economic climate in the state that it is, many people are turning to charity for help and assistance. People that would never have dreamed of seeking such support in the past. And it is not the traditionally vulnerable groups, such as the homeless, seeking food relief, but encompassing the aged, single parents and the working poor.
The statistics are mind blowing, that in Adelaide…
102,718 people seek food relief services in South Australia every month
One third of them are children
49% of welfare agencies reported a growth in demand for food relief services
+33% is the amount of food required to meet demand

So what can we do to help? For the month of July, Foodbank SA has partnered with Westfield centres throughout South Australia, with their annual Food Drive. Located in Westfield Marion, Westfield Tea Tree Plaza and Westfield West Lakes, giant purple donation bins have been erected outside Coles and Woolworths stores.

FoodbankSA are welcoming donations of your non-perishable items such as cans of spaghetti and baked beans, pasta sauce jars and bags of pasta, jam and vegemite, tuna, rice and oats, just for some examples. They are aiming for  their July DONATION GOAL of 10 TONNE!

So lets do our bit to help fight hunger in South Australia by adding a couple of extra non-perishable items to our food shop and dropping them in the collection bins on our way out.
